Sunday 12th June
A dozen hardy(?) damp souls met at a new (to us) venue (Domestique, Great Bookham) for 11s. At departure time Pam, Rachel, Tony and Donald headed for home. After a brief discussion the unanimous decision was Leatherhead Wetherspoons for lunch. A somewhat circuitous route via Bagdon Hill, Chapel Lane and Old London Road brought us to the A24 at Mickleham where we joined the cycle track. After passing through Leatherhead Leisure Centre we briefly joined the Cobham Road before turning onto the track taking us past Fetcham Mill Pond and the model railway site thence to Wetherspoons.
After a long lunch break with interesting conversations including gigabytes, megabytes, insect bites, the Flying Scotsman, insecticides, trepanning and military nursing, Ed, Bob, Roger, Vic, Dave W and Ray W decided to head for home leaving Lilian to accompany me (in the dry) on a cake hunt. A quietish ride along Highlands Road, Reigate Road and Headley Common Road was spoiled by two police cars hastening to what turned out to be a car which had stopped off road wrong side after demolishing part of a fence. An apparently unhurt cyclist appeared to be giving a statement. A quick descent of Pebble Hill led to Brockham where we felt obliged to check out the Victoria Sponge and Lemon Drizzle Cake. They passed. We parted at Dorking.

It's me again (pause for groans)
It was fortunate that I checked my emails just before leaving otherwise I would have missed the "sick - can you lead?" email. Thoughts for the ride led me to roads scarcely travelled as I headed towards Old Malden and Epsom. Just after the RAC club I was joined by a lady who then hand out a good thrashing (on the climbs, I hasten to add). After Pebble Hill we turned onto A25 for the short run to the Pheasant (was Jolly Brewers) at Buckland. Bob and Ed had already arrived and soon we were joined by Terry and Jeff.
Janice departed first concerned that her son might emerge from his bed only when his adolescence was over. Bob agreed to meet us at lunch so four turned left in Buckland towards Betchworth then along Gadbrook Road to the junction above Blackbrook. Beside Fourwents Pond four became three as Jeff preferred the blackstuff whilst the rest faced farm concrete and gravel as it appears only one of us had previously visited Ewood (an earlier site of Newdigate). A slightly confused rendezous with Jeff at Parkgate brought our numbers back up to strength. After the Fox (Very Dead) at Norwood Hill we descended towards Hookwood and suburban miles brought us to the centre of Horley and The Jack Fairman just before one. Despite a noticeable breeze it was warm enough to dine alfresco.

Three placenames sum up our afternoon efforts - Charlwood, Rusper, Capel where we rewarded ourselves with the customary cakes. Around 65 miles door to door. But not as warm as expected thanks to that boisterous wind.

A very truncated account of Dave's ride (if anyone can fill in the gaps let me know!)
It was touch and go as to whether or not I would make the Hampton Court rendezvous so I took a northern route through Ashford, Poyle and on to Liquid Leisure Horton where Alan and Tony were waiting for Irene. In Windsor we took a three-sided route to Wetherspoons (it wasn't where I thought it was). Bob and Irene(!) had already arrived soon to be joined by the posse.
After a leisurely 11s, Bob and Alan were left behind as is the norm. We headed along NCN 4 having to compete with fun runners (more accurately walkers) coming in the opposite direction. A second Thames crossing was made on the M4 south side. Dave then took us on a tour of Maidenhead's suburbs ending in Pinkneys Green where continuing vaguely NW we descended for a thankfully brief quarter mile on the A404. After Birchetts Green, a restricted byway led directly to Littlewick Green and an alfresco lunch at the Cricketers.
White Waltham, Paley Street and Maidens Green all featured on the return. At Woodside I departed (to retrieve my jacket left at the lunchspot - thanks Irene's Jazz). Quite warm though somewhat overcast with no more than a spot or two of rain.

Joint Ride
Sunday the 15th Joint Ride with South Bucks CTC
Dave and Don were not joining the ride and Bob was going to make his own way to lunch. My route was around Chobham to Borrowhill and a big loop round to Brookwood where we joined the canal to Hermitage road and onto Mayford, Old Woking and onto lunch at The Herbert Wells, Wetherspoons, Woking, the last half mile John Capell led to lunch as he had lived in Woking some forty years ago. Bob had already arrived, food was soon ordered and consumed. Two of the South Bucks cyclists decided to cycle back to the Chilterns and left the rest of us to wend our way to tea.
Tea was planned to be at Bourne Valley GC with the route there heading in a loop heading towards Ripley and round to West Byfleet. Around half way there the group was stretched out and the back 2 took a wrong turn. A frantic search back along the root proved fruitless so the rest of us re-grouped in West Byfleet and the consensus was to have tea at the GC in Addlestone as it was on the planned route, I left 2 message with Terry the back maker. Just before we were leaving Terry phoned to say he was at tea at Bourne Valley GC and that John Capell had headed back to Fairoaks. The other member of the South Bucks contingent, Barry, was with us so while other others headed home I cycled back to Fairoaks with Barry where John was waiting. All in all they had thoroughly enjoyed cycling mostly unfamiliar territory. I took advantage of Johns trailer and the fact he was heading home via Staines and cycled home from Staines Bridge still managing 65 miles.
Chatting to John about ride numbers, it appears they have similar turnouts to South West London with small numbers on Sunday but 50 to 60 on a Wednesday.

Sunday 8th May 2016 Savill Gardens - Hurst - Egham
A surprising number of cyclists arrived at elevenses this morning, I counted
sixteen, and by the time we had afternoon tea there was still thirteen!! It was
certainly a day to celebrate - glorious sun shine with the temperature well up
in the twenties. There was also quite a strong breeze which slowed me down from
Hurst back to Egham!
We left Windsor Great Park via Cranbourne Gate to the Peanut roundabout, Winkfield, then Maidens Green, into Bishops Road to Moss End. From there we turned right into Bottle Lane, on to Binfield before arriving at the Green Man. With the help of a tailwind we arrived in good time and after ordering we settled in the garden and waited - and waited!!! Some had their light meals quite quickly but it was those of us who had ordered child sized meals that waited - and waited!! The meals were good but we did not get away until 14.30, hence the change of tea venue, not enough time to get to Shepperton Lock, or even Notcutts before they closed!
We returned via Shurlock Row to Moss End, Winkfield Row, almost into Ascot but turned towards Cheapside and back into The Park - exiting at Bishopsgate. It was now 3.45 and that is when, after a little debate, it was agreed we would stop at my place in Egham. Graham, Irene and Lilian went across to Tesco's to buy cakes whilst I put the kettle on!
A most enjoyable day! Great to see so many people out - several who are not regular Cheam and Morden riders. Well done everybody for your day's mileage would be at least double mine!!!! Next time?

After a brief but lonely vigil, I left Hampton Court by a direct route: Lower Sunbury, Laleham, Wraysbury and Eton. Not long after ten, I found Dorney Court crowded with bikes everywhere. In time we became eighteen including newcomer Jane though only ten were out for the day.
Somewhat behind schedule we crossed the Thames on the south side of M4 before joining NCN 4 to the west of Maidenhead leaving it before Knowl Hill. At the top of Rememham Hill, we ran into cars queueing to enter Henley; for reasons of his own Neil decided to join them! Wiser heads sped downhill into Aston and over the weir to Hambleden and then up the gentle rise to The Chequers in Fingest arriving at 1245. On such a glorious day, the emptish garden suited us fine. Just before our leaving, Neil rejoined after his tour of hills to the north of Henley.
Over lunch the vote was for no more hills so we continued to Marlow. A backroads route led us past the station, over the A404 interchange and then past The Queen's Head in Little Marlow. Finally a cyclepath alongside the narrow but busy A4155 brought us to Bourne End and then Cookham.
Here a second vote confirmed no more hills so we rode on into Maidenhead and Bray. This time we used the footpath on the north side of the M4 (rarely used - now I remember why). And thus we arrived back at Dorney where faces reddened as we gossiped alfresco.
About 80 miles door to door and home just before six. Ignoring a cool start and an obvious breeze, a great day for a ride. Cyclists everywhere; fewer red kites than expected.

May Day to Fingest Change Of Start Time
Please not: The start time is 0830 (not 0845 as printed in the newsletter) and with around 23 miles to 11s......
The total distance is about 80 miles at a steady pace. That's rather too many for early May so don't come expecting unwanted climbs or lengthy refreshment breaks! Unusually we'll be going clockwise so Hambleden Lock in the morning and Marlow in the afternoon.
Like many pubs in the Chilterns, The Chequers in Fingest is an eaterie. For those who can't survive all day on a starter, Marlow has at least two supermarkets.

A summary of Dave's ride.
There were 3 at the start and 7 at Sunningdale. Paul headed for home as we set off the opposite direction round the back of Windlesham and into Lightwater and up the climb spurning Red Road for much of its length. We then enjoyed the long long descent into Deepcut and Mytchett before turning west to a quietish Tilly Shilling in the centre of Farnborough. After lunch Dave's west, north and east through Queen Elizabeth Park saw us to Farnborough North and its two level crossings. The lunchtime vote for tea was Addlestone which was reached via Pirbright, Knaphill, Chobham (and windowless Castle Grove), and Burrowhill.
About 60 miles door to door. Chilly but bright with just a few spots of rain after tea.

5 for Ice Cream
Sunday the 17th
With Warlingham for 11's being 23 miles cycle for me and around 33 for Pam and Irene, plus the fact I hadn't clue how to get there an alternative was on the cards. So Pam's reccy ride to 11's at Savill Garden saw Ed, Irene, Pam, Ray Wren and myself (5) arrive in good time for refreshments.
The lunch destination was the Green Man at Hurst. Through the Great park and the Peanut, Maidens Green to Moss End and onto lunch. Although Sunny there was a chill in the air that made it worse by having to sit outside. We were soon served our children's portions, mostly sausage and mash, followed by a scoop of ice cream (included in the kiddies portion).
A wrong turn saw us on the dreaded Drift road back to the Peanut and on to tea at Notcutts GC Laleham. A nice day out in the saddle.

17 April - Bull's Head, Pratt's Bottom
The meeting point this week was the Amano Caffe in Warlingham. The weather was dry, the sun was out but come eleven o'clock there were only four of us there. Were the others still winching themselves up the hill? Were they put off by my reputation for wet rides? Who knew. But we waited while Jeff finished off his bacon sandwich before he headed off home for domestic duties.
That left me to lead, Dave S to backmark, and Janice to be the rest of the peloton.
As we were already at an altitude of 600 feet it would be downhill all the way to lunch. Well not really. But it was downhill until the next uphill section.
We headed off through Chelsham before dropping down into the valley and up past Beddlestead Farm to the top of the North Downs ridge. Passing around the edge of Tatsfield we reached Hawley's Corner - at 800 feet the highest point in Greater London.
Another long downhill section (followed by a short uphill bit) led us to Cudham, before more (mostly) downhill roads brought us to Pratt's Bottom. The roads had been quiet, the bluebells were in bloom in the roadside woods, and the sun was shining as we arrived at The Bull's Head.
Food was promptly served and we were on our way within the hour.
A brief loop north of the A21 to Green Street Green gave us a short hill to warm up the legs and a tour of large houses of various architectural styles. Next we climbed up to Downe and then down towards Keston before heading south to Fickleshole. From there Chelsham, Warlingham and Bug Hill took us to Woldingham Garden Centre for afternoon tea.
We then all headed off to Burntwood Lane for a hilly ride home.....

A new formula of ride today.
Basically short in distance but with more climbing than would be normal for a typical Sunday clubrun.
In part this was to allow for my mood changes associated with insomnia and visit a "new" cyclist's cafe at Bookham,which had a closing time of 3pm.
Although I was groggy in the morning,I had perked up by the afternoon.
The ride from Ashtead was via Headley and the wonderful Lodgebottom Road/Headley Lane to Rykas.
Past Chapel Farm and the ascent up to Ranmore.
White Down Lane to the A25.
Past Abinger Hatch to the triangle then Friday Street to..................Stephan Langton, Friday Street.
It was 12.20pm.The sandwiches looked tasty served on a wooden board with crisps and salad.
Ann returned to her bike to find a flat tyre.It was 1.30pm and I was aware that we had to push on so regretably, we left Ann & Steve to possibly meet later.
It was down to Ray, Janice, Lillian and myself to checkout the tea stop.
It's easy to miss.........around the corner from the parade of shops on the south side of the A246.
I was impressed for such a tiny cafe.
Friendly guy with possibly his girlfriend welcomed us.
Nice selection of cakes.
When I asked why there was limited publicity (it's been open two years) I was told Brian, the owner doesn't want hoards of cyclists because there is simply not enough room.
A fine day with a moderate easterly felt on the return.
Aldi has limited cycling featured this week.
Unlike Lidl, Aldi can deliver via their online site.
I ordered a Garmin Edge 25 (£109.99 at Wiggle) safely arrived today for the very reasonable sum of £79.99!

The day gave a hint of summer and might be described as eventful. Seven became eight on the Middlesex side of Kingston Bridge when Janice appeared after mistaking the start (HC). We took my route across Bushy Park to Hampton, Hanworth and Ashford before starting a sort of 'Genevieve' trail near Vermeulens. In Poyle we had to edge nervously past a very skittish horse and trap and another more docile in Colnbrook. The obstacles grow ever more in Hollow Hill Lane but it remains passable (just). Soon we were in Langley Park where I spotted a muntjac moving too fast for a more accurate description. Most now crossed the A412 into Black Park, a roughstuff manoevre missed by two backmarkers. Being less than 1/2 mile from the cafe, no harm was done.
Amongst the six already seated was the Trencherman on a rare trip south. As the crow flies, it's less than six miles to lunch so we rode north to the ford (yes that ford) and Fulmer. After heading west to the now demolished One Pin PH (yes in that film) we plunged down into Hedgerley and along Kiln Lane and into the Portman Estate. This brought us to the busy A355 where a motorist halted traffic to allow us to cross. We then followed the western edge of Burnham Beeches to Dorney Wood and Burnham where lunch awaited (or so I thought). From past experience I'd not phoned the pub (bad idea) and today there were 75 guests for a christening! Fortunately T***o Express was open and not far away. We were now back to 13 as three rejoined having been detached at 11s; Bob (by arrangement), Daniel (who'd shuddered at "offroad") and Don (who'd joined up with Bob).

Good News
1. The Plough and Attic Rooms, pub at Rusper reopened before Easter.
2. Stretches of Weare Street have been resurfaced.
3. Henfold rebuilding plans are (still) with 'the authorities'.

Dave's Easter Sunday ride from Leatherhead
27/3/16
It was dry when I left home but I had a headwind all the way to Leatherhead. On arrival Dave was already tucking into a cooked breakfast and Bob was enjoying a coffee. Vic arrived and just before we left the rain started. The lunch stop was undecided but we headed in the rough direction of Windlesham.
With the headwind and rain we eventually settled on the Saddlers Arms at Send Marsh with just 3 for lunch. Just coming into Send from up Woodhill from the London road at Burnt Common and Vic wanted to show us something, see photo. Lunch was served promptly and once we were ready to leave the rain started again but only briefly.
From here we headed towards West Byfleet where Dave left us to take the canal and Vic am I headed to Woodham where I left Vic and headed home with a very pleasant tailwind. A nice ride with some Sun. Thank you Dave.
