Sunday 6 March

The temperature at nearby Effingham was 5C and with a north-easterly wind blowing it seemed considerably colder when ten of us left West Horsley Squires, destination Guildford. After a few hundred yards or metres east we turned north onto the bridleway which led to Lollesworth Lane, West Horsley. En route to Wisley airfield we passed The Hautboy, now scheduled to be converted into flats (Lady Harberton must be laughing in her grave). The airfield was approached via the bridleway through Bridge End Farm - carefully avoiding the free-range hens. The recent film crew left the airfield neat and tidy - another is due soon. Keeping to the lanes we passed The Anchor at Pyrford Lock then via Papercourt Lane, Old Woking and Jacobs Well and cycle lanes to The Row Barge, Riverside, Guildford. Baguettes etc are not served here on Sundays but we were allowed to have childrens portions of roast lunches, which most found sufficient. Having been advised of our coming the landlord had arranged a table (with tablecloth) in a separate bar, complete with real fire. Very pleasant ! Normal menu is available during the week - worth bearing in mind for a Wayfarers stop, possibly outside, riverside. There was a unanimous decision to have 3s at Ockham Bites, so after lunch we crossed the A25 via an interesting bridge then briefly rode alongside the A25 before joining the cycle route adjacent to the Wey and A3, leaving it north of Burpham and using the cycle track alongside the A3 to Ripley and OB. A dry day's ride, the sun was out a lot of the time but the last stretch was into a chilly headwind !
