April 10 2009 I Must Go Down To The Seas Again
With most away on the Easter tour, it was time to collect two points by sampling another of Simon's ride. This time it was to Southend, unvisited for over 40 years so a second visit was long over. Despite two no-shows, there were still 58 at Hyde Park Cormer including a large number of YACF regulars. As with most night rides, there wasn't much of a view nor I can tell you much about the ride itself being a TEC for half of it. I recall the route took in Embankment, The Blind Beggar in Whitechapel, Stratford (views of the nearby Olympic Stadium) before veering southeast in Ilford through Dagenham to Lakeside for a 0300 breakfast for those who fancied and could afford it. We hit countryside (or at least unlit roads) for the first time between Chadwell St Mary and Mucking. By Essex's standards, there was next a hilly section through Stanford-Le-Hope and Thundersley (Bread and Cheese Hill). Turning off the A13 in Leigh-On-Sea we stopped to admire the sunrise over Canvey Island before descending to sea level in Southend for breakfast at the Rose Cafe beside the pier. The ride collected 2 punctures and one broken chain. I clocked up 75+ miles door to door and was home before 1030.
